Children's Room Theme Decorating

powered by FreeFind

Hello and welcome! Hope all of you had a wonderful Holiday Season!
Let's all look towards a happy, healthy 2003!

Being a wife, mother, grandmother, (help, I am too young for this!), interior decorator, painter, artist, garden designer, writer, and keeper of the castle, I thought I was prepared for anything. I wasn't. We have been swamped with requests for more kids' rooms ideas! "Decor Doc" is busy, and although I have taken the time to give some quick, free ideas, it is becoming quite difficult to find any "spare" time for giving free ideas anymore! So hopefully, this newsletter will help answer some of those questions.!

The August Newsletter gave some basics of decor for children's rooms.
Well... it seems that I am being chastised for not including enough specifics! So...Here goes!

Starting off with the basics, we can leap off into some themes. We'll cover Western, Nautical, Princess, and Character themes.

Characters are the easiest as far as I am concerned. You pick the character, like Winnie the Pooh, and you have the colors, accents, and accessories at your fingertips. So many variations of characters are available in sheeting, fabrics...in the second column, look in the "design list" dropdown menu for Winnie the Pooh"), pillows, border papers, and accents, that you can't go wrong. Just try to keep the room from looking like a store display!

For Winnie, a pale yellow on the walls works well. A soft, golden glow. Warm woods look well here, too. I like this theme done with green carpet or throw rugs to look like grass. And a Pooh tree on the wall. Yes, you can! Just pick a Pooh book and copy his tree. Freehand or copy, and make a grid on the copy and draw onto the wall. It really is not hard to do. Eeyore and Tigger can be added the same way. Be sure to decide beforehand on the classic or the contemporary Pooh. They do not mix well!

Tiny pictures can be found on the Internet of the characters and printed out to be decoupaged onto knobs, drawer pulls, or lamp shades. Plenty of plush animals, pillows, and presto! A great Pooh room!

Pale blue on the ceiling really makes a Winnie-like atmosphere. Add clouds! Add balloons!
Large or small, the room will look great!

Western Rooms can be cowboys, boots, hats, spurs, horses, lariats, Indians, plains, etc. I think mainly of little boys, but many girls like this theme also. Start with wall colors that work for you, and your house! But that especially work for your child! ~smile~

Any color works here. Even deep blues like a night sky look good. Your starting point could be great linens you have found in a pattern that trips your "Trigger". (Sorry about that!) Take colors from there and go with it. I like warm woods here too. Whatever furniture you have can be worked into this theme. However, if you are starting from scratch, the rustic woods are the best!
Want a terrific covered wagon bed?  You have to see this!

How about a western fence section as a headboard? Barn doors in miniature as window shutters? A horse head hanging over a fence gate painted, or stenciled, on a closet door? This could be done with a photo/grid drawn on it and copied section by section onto the door.

For an open plains effect, consider a wall mural, either hand painted, or from a wallpaper mural. Here too, I like a blue ceiling sky with clouds. Or a sunset sky with darker blue on the walls. Find pictures you truly like and go from there. Ideas are endless!

Fairy Tale Princess Rooms are fun and delightful! Think in terms of pastels and yards of tulle. I have constructed PVC pipe canopies over beds and draped that frame work with enough tulle to choke an entire herd of elephants! For an extra treat, check out this Princess bed!

All kids love little covered places they can use to hide out. Create a corner "castle" by draping tulle from ceiling hooks and letting it fall in puddles to the floor. She will love it!
White furniture   is perfect for this look. If your furniture can use a redo, consider using a stark white in a semi-gloss finish. Marvelous with all the pastels. Use the softest rainbow colors for a truly magical room.

White dressers could have pastel painted drawer pulls. Tulle can be used to make lamp shade covers, letting the light come through in soft rainbow tones. Choose accessories like fairy tale dolls in royal dresses, and shiny rhinestone tiaras on a high shelf.
Satin ribbons tied into bows to hold back the canopy and around the lampshades add to this look.

Curtains could be a pastel solid material onto which you hot glue "jewels" befitting your royal little girl. These are inexpensive and available at craft stores and large chain stores. How about a distant castle on a hilltop painted onto a wall? Is that a young Prince standing halfway up the hill? Don't forget large comfy pillows to toss on the floor. Preferably with "jewels" glued to the edges. Several are needed for comfortable lounging! These are easily made from standard bed pillows and covered in soft fabrics. Glittery trim and jewels should be kept to the edges to avoid scratching a soft little face! Ground this "floating" look with throw rugs that pull the theme together.
Beautiful childrens bed canopies work well here. Sleep well, little Princess!

A Nautical Look is good for boys or girls. Easy to do and easy on the eyes. Think watery colors of blues and greens and aquas. Soft sky blues and deeper blues to "anchor" the look. ( Could not help myself there! Grin) Boats, signal flags, compass "stars", ship's wheels, and waves all can be done in the "simplest" form to the more sophisticated realistic form, depending on your child's age. Border papers, and prints can be found in both styles. As can throw rugs!. While toy-like boats are fun, the more realistic look will last longer as far as "growing" with your child. But if your little one is very young, go with the childlike look. They grow up too quickly as it is!

I would use aqua on the walls, perhaps shading it down the wall to end in a truer, deeper blue. Or use white wainscoting to divide an aqua or pale blue upper wall from a deep blue below. This sets the mood. Red and white add punch and a true nautical feel. Add yellow for contrast and to make the blues "pop".

With printed linens and nautical lamps and accessories, you'll have a great look! A real life preserver hung on the wall can be used to hang jammies and other clothes if "s" hooks are hung from the life preserver's ropes. A ship's wheel works well for this, also. It also makes a neat headboard! Just hang behind a twin bed and stencil your child's name on it. Be sure to firmly attach to the wall for safety!

Ship's lanterns would look good on a high shelf, and for regular lighting, there are many nautical lamps to choose from. Paint ships wheels around drawer pulls. Don't forget throw pillows! Essential for curling up! If you use a border paper, use the colors from it for the pillows. For an extra special treat, make a lighthouse playhouse. Simple plywood construction. It doesn't have to be very large. Just big enough for two kids to sit in and daydream of Sea Captain days ahead!

I sure hope this sets your own creativity in motion. If you need help, Decor Doc is available to you.
Once again, I wish all of my wonderful readers, a Happy New Year.
See you next month.

Jane
